The Friends of the Preston Academy formed in 1997 to preserve this historically significant brick building, which is located in downtown Kingwood. The Preston Academy opened to students sometime between 1843 and 1845 and operated as the Preston Academy until 1867, when it became a public school. Restoration efforts are near completion, and have included stabilization of the cut stone and dirt basement, masonry and interior work. Once the project is complete, the Preston Academy will be home to one of the five Legacy charter sites, charged with the mission of "collecting, preserving, and communicating family, local, and regional histories in a variety of venues."
